The "breather" (aka PCV) hose goes from the plastic fitting on the top of the valve cover down between the intake runners to the bottom of the air cleaner housing. It does run right over the oil filter and if it were knocked off the air cleaner housing end it would be difficult to see. The hose is about 1" in diameter, so it could cause a significant unmetered air leak which would definitely make the engine run poorly.
