I didn't find any noticeable marks, but determined that the impeller had been pressed down too far and was pushing the spring loaded seal down till the spring was fully compressed and was not letting the seal ride on the sealing surface of the impeller, the spring when fully compressed cocked the seal surface slightly - thus a significant leak. This was not my car and I never really figured out why the impeller would go on 'too far' and cause this. It also seemed that the pump would not function as well as it should with the vanes not very close to the cover. My evaluation was that the impeller should be pressed down until the vanes just clear the cover surface - when gasket installed should provide proper clearance for function of the pump. I did inspect a seal that had not been installed and verified that it would not function properly if pushed too far down - bottoming the spring.
