The wire going to thermo switch on the inlet neck of the radiator needs a ground source to turn the fan on. At one point I was using the negative side of the coil for that ground, but plugging it in to the coil meant the fan would run any time the key was on. My car only runs hot if I'm stuck in traffic, so hooking up a fan switch on the dash made more sense so I could turn the fan on and off as needed. It's relatively simple - two prong switch - one prong wired to ground, the other prong wired to wire that hooks to the thermo switch.
