Steve,
Is the fluid leaking outside the car or inside? (I'm assuming outside). I took a look at the service manual, and there are two hose/pipe assemblies, one pipe that runs from one end of the rack to the other, and o-ring seals/gaskets that seal the rack ends and the servo. I would think that all of these are likely candidates for fluid leaks rather than the rack housing being cracked, but obviously I've not looked at your car.
The hoses can be replaced individually in the car, but any of the other things require removal of the steering rack to fix which is not a small project. In that case, there are 3 options to discuss with your mechanic:
1) Remove the existing rack and rebuild it. I'm not sure about parts availability, there may be specialists in Hemmings that might do this kind of work, but probably not cheap.
2) Obtain and install a used Power Steering Rack. Part might be available from sources we've discussed, but there's a risk of not knowing the condition of the used part and what problems it might bring. Personally I would usually rebuild a used part before installing it at this point, but again that may be a cost issue.
3) Obtain and install a used Manual Steering Rack. You still need to confirm the good condition of the used rack, and I recommend at least installing new rubber bellows. Removing the old bellows allows you to confirm the good condition of the plastic bushing and the inner tie rod joints. I believe that the Manual Rack is a bolt-in swap for the Power Rack, but I have not done it before (beware free advice :-) ).
I hope that helps!
Best,
Gary
