Sounds like a problem with the cold start valve, not battery power. Hook up a test light to the cold start valve leads and crank it over while cold (after sitting 2-3hrs). There should always be a positive going to it the yellow (or white?) when starting. The negative (black)occurs when the thermo switch is cold enough to remain closed.
