"Thin Head" fly wheel bolts Posted by Larry West [Email] (#1140) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Larry West) on Sat, 13 Jul 2013 11:13:51 In Reply to: Re: 1978 99 turbo fly wheel bolts, Gary Stottler [Profile/Gallery] , Tue, 9 Jul 2013 04:43:38 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Per the 900 maual transmission manual, the "Thin Head" bolts came with the 5-speed gearbox, as there is a "pre damper" on the clutch disc that has to fit in that area. AFAIK, the thin head bolts can be used whether or not you are using a 5-speed clutch disc.
To identify a 5-speed disc, you will see on one side only, close to the hub, a smaller, thin disc with three small springs arranged similarly to the six main springs. That side faces the flywheel, and requires using the thin head bolts.
4-speeds, at least up through 1979, had "normal" head bolts. I'm not sure whether they switched across the board to thinner head bolts starting in 1980.
