New/old clutch parts compatibility Posted by Gary Stottler [Email] (#1463) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Gary Stottler) on Sat, 4 Jan 2014 08:53:46 In Reply to: Saab Pressure Plate New Style, Johnson [Profile/Gallery] , Mon, 30 Dec 2013 05:18:02 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Here are photos of the new (1990-1994 900) and old (1978 and earlier/later 99/900) clutch disc (pressure plate in separate post since I still can't seem to get two photos in one post) that may answer some of the recent compatibility questions.
With regard to the thick bolt head/thin bolt head question, you can see that the new disc has a two stage damper which places a considerably larger peice of hardware (the 2nd stage) between the disc and the flywheel, hence the thinner bolt heads to provide more clearance. It was mentioned that in some cases this disc will work with the original thick head bolts, and I believe that is true as long as you have a nice new (thick) clutch disc and a flywheel that has not been turned too many times. However, I think that the stack up is such that if everything is at minimum thickness, the damper will hit the bolts. Unfortunately, you may not know about this until after you get it all back together and try to run it, so beware!
In general, it looks like both the disc and the pressure plate were upgraded in the later versions to better damp shock (perhaps because there continued to be gearbox breakage issues with the 900 5-speed).
Pressure plate to follow!
Best,
Gary
