So elegant that it brings tears to my eyes.
A few weeks back I posted about converting my 1976 99 alternator to a Bosch (AL35X, 70 amp) internally regulated one. What I did was use a black single insulator that is found on Saabs in many places. It is a rectangular hard black plastic insulator that you can insert a non-insulated crimped connector. I removed the red wire (D+) from the existing 3-prong connector. It's a little tricky to extract, but I used a very small screwdriver (like for eyeglasses) to push the lock pin down and extract the connector. Then I plugged the bare female red connector into the single black connector. It snapped in perfectly. Then I just plugged this connector into the back of the new alternator at D+. The black and yellow wires remained in the old connector, and I zip tied it off out of harm's way. I did the same at the external voltage regulator end and removed the regulator. I kicked around other ideas, like making a jumper, splicing, cutting, hacking, etc.
I love this solution because:
1) It is non-destructive.
2) It is simple and doesn't add any more connections.
3) It insulates a hot connection
4) It is reversible.
5) It looks factory.
