Sorry it's not easier but...when it's done, you'll love it. Scanwest here in Seattle installed a 5-speed transmission with custom ratios in my 1.7l 1970 99e and the thing drives like a dream. Plenty of gear overlap - I can drive it like it's made out of glass, shifting at 2500 rpm for super gentle driving, or shift at 3500 rpm for zippy (enough for me) performance. At highway speeds it's way quieter and I got huge gas mileage (35+) cruising at 65 recently. I also own a '75 EMS with a 4 speed, and around town, it's fine, but it clearly needs another gear on the highway. Good luck with your effort and I'm sure you'll enjoy the result.
