The engine was basically the same in 99s and 900s from 1975 to 1980. It had the same basic configuration, same Bosch fuel injection system, etc. There were some year-to-year differences in compression ratio and in emissions components (mostly the Bosch PNs on the fuel distributor and Control Pressure regulator). Some non-turbo models had different EGR and AIR systems. There are a couple of good sources for rebuilding fuel injection components (specialtyauto dot com is a DeLorean specialist, but they do all Bosch K-Jetronic systems and can provide stainless steel fuel lines to replace the plastic ones). I agree, if you have the Saab service manual (not Haynes) and this group you should not have much trouble fixing a 99 or finding parts.
I would be more circumspect if the car has a later ('81-87) 8-valve engine. It depends on your goals for the car, but you can get into a lot of struggles with a car that's been heavily modified.
Good luck and enjoy!
Gary
