I have used the EWP on 2 B-motor cars, one with and one without the controller. My daily driver is an '80 900 GLE with EWP and controller. It takes forever to get any heat out of the heater in the winter, so I block the entire front of the radiator with cardboard and that helps a lot. I live in NC, and on a 3 hr. drive at 75 mph on a hot summer day the controller cannot keep up even when turned to max. so the car begins to overheat. As soon as I back off the speed, the car cools down quickly. I have a new radiator, no thermostat. I thought I felt a slight increase in power at high rpm's but I can't verify that. I didn't notice any additional strain on the electrical system. The EWP is wired directly to the battery, and switched by a relay controlled by the ignition switch.
The other car was an '80 99GLi. I used the EWP with a potentiometer (like a rheostat) to control the pump speed, otherwise the car ran too cool with the pump running full speed. It took a long time to heat up in the winter too. I have since switched engines in that car with an original water pump and I definitely prefer it that way.
Some have claimed not to have problems with the heater in the winter. I think the plumbing must be the key. Maybe someone else can shed some light.
There is more info on the EWP and 99's in general in the archives of the "other models" (93/95/96) BB which used to be the 99's home.
Here is the URL to Mark Jeter's web site which describes how to install and plumb the EWP. http://www.geocities.com/saab99ewp/
