This happened to my 77 99gl once. Had it tack welded to get it home (350miles) but I did not trust that type of fix. I picked up a used shaft with good splines (must still have machined ribs on the top of the splines which run perpendicular to the shaft itself) and used the same gear/spline housing. I don't think debris is a problem as it gradually wears itself down to failure. It's a good idea to start collecting used shafts if possible.
