knock sensor retro fit idea

my 76 EMS had a 91 2.1L put in it. I'm worried about knock since the motor has N/A pistons running a turbo. The timing was set so that knock was eliminated but I think it's really hurting gas mileage (could be wrong about that) It still knocks once in a long while if I really get on it.
Anyway, here's the question. I saw knock sensor for sale on ebay. I was thinking that maybe I could rig up a dash light that indicates knock. I dont know exactly how the knock sensor works. Is it like an on/off switch thats activated by knock, or does it put out variable voltage based on the severity of the knock? ...
I not really in a financial position to put the lower compression pistons in. But then again, I'll be in real bad shape if I blow up the motor. Any ideas on this? Should I just bite the bullet and put the right pistons in? Does anybody know how much the lower compression pistons would affect the performance? Does anybody else run a turbo on a non-turbo engine? Scanwest in seattle is always telling me I should switch over to the low compression pistons. I should probably listen to them! :) It sure is fun to drive like this though.
