If you ask me, the water pump on the later engines with the 12 cog drive gear, is scary...I've done a few in my day, but the last one ruined an engine for me, and I had the tool for the job(pic). Inferior parts bought from ebay were suspect. I think it was mid-1976 they went to the inferior pump design > changed from a durable steel gear to a brittle, finer tooth, cast iron gear < find a shop in the country willing to do that job and warranty it! Depending where you are in the USA, you may be able to find someone with the tool to borrow or one of the few shops who would still do a 99 waterpump.
Earlier 99's > pre 1976 might have the coarse tooth pump, which can be removed with a slide hammer(unless it's had an engine change in the past?, engine ID code may give the year of the block). There are sites on the net that give instructions on how to change a pump, so procedures are readily available.
Where to find pump parts? They're around, just have to search the right places. Others may chime in with their sources.
