I have a little experience with materials, so thought I'd chime in here:
Delrin is DuPont's trade name for one of their acetal resin plastics.

It's expensive, but it would be an excellent choice for steering rack bushings. It is used in applications where light weight, toughness, impact resistance, wear resistance and some flexibility are required:

Polyurethane comes in many different hardnesses, but even with a fairly hard composition it is prone to stretching and extrusion when put under pressure. It's also not good for use in high temperature situations.
Another good option for material would be Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene ("UHMW"). It's very similar to Nylon: impact resistant, wear resistant, tough, flexible...and inexpensive.
Or you can use actual nylon: oil-filled or MDS filled for their wear properties...somewhat expensive.
Most any machine shop will probably have scraps of Delrin or UHMW lying around, or you can get them from McMaster-Carr:

Hope this helps. Let us know what you end up using.
