I own 2 older model Saabs, both unfortunately with gearbox problems. The 76 Saab lost 1st 2nd and reverse gears. I could only shift into 3rd and fourth. So against all common sense I pulled the engine in order to break into the gearbox to repair the3 problem. Needless to say in order to repair a shifting problem the gerarbox needs to be totally dismanteled and in there lies my dilema. According to my haynes manual I need to remove the intermediate shaft using a suitable tool which will allow the intermediate gear to fall free and rest in the bottom of the transmission case. I do not have a suitable tool but my semi suitable tool has enabled me to get the shaft about 1/2 way out. My intention is to gert the front cover off so I can get at the gear selector rods and forks, but something is not allowing this to happen. It does not appear to be the intermediate gear which is causing the hold up. Any suggestions? At this point I believe I have bitten off more than I can chew. Even if I do get it apart I may not be able to get it back together again. It may be good practice for the 72. Thanks.
Tony
