The area below the battery seemed to be the worst, as far as rust and pitting. I assumed battery acid had caused the paint removal, and the subsequent rust problem in that area. I already have blasted the area to white metal, and coated it twice with POR15. I ran out, but had planned to get some more and give it yet another coat. The stuff is supposed to be impervious to just about any chemical(let some dry on your skin, then try to remove it).
After POR15 will come a light scuffing with a scotchbrite pad, then a heavy coat of epoxy primer. The pitting is pretty deep, but I think a coat of spot putty or two will fill all the pits. Next I will use some urethane primer to do the rest of the fill and sand work. The final steps with be a urethane basecoat of cardinal red, then clearcoat.
I think that should do the trick. Any heat from the exhaust manifold or front pipe will have to penetrate the clear, then the basecoat, then the multiple coats of primer before it even gets to any filler.
