Leif--
In 1977, Saab randomly pulled 100 99s off of the assembly line in Trollhattan and installed turbocharged versions of the B engine. Most of them were CombiCoupes, but a small number of notchbacks were also selected. 37 of these 100 were sent to America to be tested by every day folks, Saab execs and editors of the "big three" car mags..Car & Driver, Road & Track and Motor Trend. At the end of the test period. most of these cars stayed with their test families, most were sold to others and driven into the ground.
Thanks to some research by Tim Winker, we know of four that survive. Tim has one, a fellow named Larry Gresh has one, Rich Kushner has a notchback, and I have the fourth. There's been a rumour of two others spotted; one outside of Indianapolis about six or seven years ago, and one reportedly in Connecticut that no one can seem to find.
You sort of have to know what you're looking at to realize that you're seeing a test car. The big giveaway is the dash plaque....Saab put a plaque with a number on it to denote which car was which. Tim has a list of all of the original 37...complete with chassis numbers and the folks to whom they were assigned.
If you go to SOC in August, you may just see mine, along with my 99T. Both cars are being worked on as we speak...........
