In the past I have experienced these symptoms due to:
Bad connections at Battery as has been already mentioned.
bad ignition switch. Car would just die. You can check if this is it by jumping the fuse box with a jumper wire from constant power block to the run block of fuses. A good used switch fixed the problem.
Bad starter cable. New cable fixed the problem.
Dirty connections at the ignition relay.
Disconnected wire at the compansating resister near the fuse box. (Check diagram for ignition system for to help locate.)
