Once when driving my '78 EMS from SLC to Boise, I noticed I was getting amazing mpg, in the rhelm of 35-36. I wasn't taking in slow either as I was trying to keep up with a lead-footed spouse driving our 9000 at the time. How could this be? The pickup screen was just clogged enough to keep me running dangerously lean, but still running. The car had been sitting a while and though I felt I had cleaned the tank well, there was still enough floating around to cause problems for months to come. I eventually just gave up and put in a better tank.
My point is that though the car may run, you may be on the verge of blowing the thing up if the tank isn't good. I burned two valves in my little process or cruising 350 miles. Clean that tank like your car depends on it.
Good luck.
