The odometer is run off a "slave" gear that runs off the speedo. If you don't have a speedometer then of course you won't have an odometer. What tends to happen with the odometer is that the little gear cracks allowing in to spin on the shaft that should turn the odometer numbers. Some have been successful just dropping a small dop of between the gear and shaft but for most the gear eventually breaks and is found in pieces at the bottom of the speedo. Catch it early (if there is such a thing for a 30yr old car) and you can possibly limp it along for years. If you don't have a speedo adn the cable isn't hooked up then you really don't have much of a question, do you? Problem is just a little obvious.
