Kent,
I just wired in a mini tach to the spot where my clock used to be. I sent one wire to the negative side of the coil, one wire to the battery for power, and one wire to operate the illumination inside the tach. You should probably place an inline fuse on the wire to your power source (4 to 5 amp I think)
