Saabers:
My 66 twocycle was running beautifully (relatively speaking) but a few weeks ago...The car seemed hesitant and lacking vroom vroom...the rearview mirror confirmed something was off when I saw huge blue smoke coming from the rear. (I only got blue smoke on start up) OK time to fiddle with the mixture I thought..or foul spark plugs?
Out goes the three NGK's A7s they were black wet looking drying quickly to a carbon appearance. I cleaned them the best I could put them back in. Hmm...could the mixture be off? too rich? I carried my hands to the passenger side and began to fiddle with the idling and mixture settings. I remember the manual back home stating to turn the mixture screw until the engine stumbles and turn half a turn I believed. Holy Moly! thick scented blue smoke now with erractic idling? GeeZ! What a sensitve little car! I settled for a high idle and thick blue smoke, slammed the hood over the tiny coughing shaky sneezing engine and scarmbled home as fast as I could...crossing my bony fingers that this thing doesn't die on route It was 2:am on an empty road with a "dead battery" cell phone buried in my pants pocket. Geez! What the hell did i do! the blue smoke smell was crawling up my nostrials as I held that big wheel... hunched over on the vinyl whiplashed causing seats.
Well I made it home....parked the beast in the bay....and flung a car cover over it. It's been three weeks Saab nuts. Now what should I do for the stories of holes in the number two piston and dentonation taunts me. May it be:
A. timing?
B. bad plugs? I installed new ones...engine smoother, but thick blue smoke consistent
C. Mixture/idling? I know this is off because my bony fingers were tinkering with the settings
D.All of the above
What is the correct way to set the mixture and idling? I dont have access to a 3cylinder tach.
What about timing?
As for the fuel/mix I use 1 quart 2 cycle oil to 8 gallons of fuel
Spark plugs are Ngk a7s. Are A8's better to avoid fouling?
I would appreciate any advice
