How to get more horsepower depends, as always, on how much $$$ you want to spend. Just look at the Trollspeed Saab 2.0 L engine putting out 760 hp at only 5800 rpm! If you are going to do a complete overhaul anyway, you might as well get it bored to 93 or 94 mm piston size while you are at it. Additional displacement has always been the cheapest way to get more horsepower. Also, try to find pistons, that will give you around 11:1 compression ratio. Overhaul the cylinderheads, porting in particular the exhaust port. Get a two barrel inlet manifold (stock on 77B-80 models) and a matching carburator (dual 36-40 mm). Find a Saab Sport&Rally or Isky performance cam with 7.2-7.6 mm lift. The valves on a stock engine will start to float at little over 6000 rpm, so you might want to find some stronger valve springs as well. Top everything off with your existing MSS exhaust and you should be set with a very streetable engine putting out at least 100 hp, probably closer to 120 hp if you go to 94 mm pistons.
