I can't swear that DFOs are interchangable with DFIs.
But if you want a good carb, snappy as the DFI but easier to live with (same gaskets, and floats as the DGV, and the power valve or "full load enrichment device" like modern carbs which lets you jet smaller on the Main jet circuit and still have all the full throttle richness you want) then get the 38 DGMS. The linkage is on the same side and opens same direction, clockwise, as all Ford carbied and ICH Weber carbied, post Solex V4s and that makes getting linage ratios and linkage hook ups way way easier, and I've seen most people's set-ups yeild less than full opening.
Now I've reccomended DGMS for years and have used them on personal cars but nearly every customer has oped for the 40DFI cause it's bigger.
If you get a DGMS you can do as SAAB says to do with the 40 DFI-2 which as we all know has 28mm venturis, Saab said bore the venturis out to 32mm so it is the same as 40DFI-5. You could safely try 31mm, or just try it stock, and for all the guys who will say that these are for racing only, hooooey, I say that they have other problems going on, they're fine for general street and a hoot on the open road. presuming the motor warrants the carb.
And finally, want economy?
Modulate you foot.
To go down the street at X rate of acceleration with a pokey ol lo-comp 1 bbl carb V4 , you would open the gas this much......
In a freshened up, hi comp, sycronous carbed V4, to go down the street at X you crack the throttle only _this_ much, see?
Don't stomp on the gas constantly.
No, go ahead, it's fun the amount of pull from low rpm these motors will make when they're done right!
