Jonathan,w
Wow, what an interesting anecdote about that recall of the FoMoCo carbs. That probably explains the engine fire that killed my dad's '72 96 back in 1984 when I was a wee four year old boy. As he tells it, he was driving to work one day in the winter and smelled smoke accompanied by bubbling hood paint. Raced to the parking lot of where he worked and opened the hood, flames shot out. Tried to extinuish the flames with his winter coat and then snow. Put it in reverse and took the key out, had a security guard call the fire department. Apparently, the ignition wires then melted together which caused the car to start back up and drive itself around in circles backwards, coming to rest after slamming into a guardrail. Anyhow, that car sat in my parents' back yard for another ten years or so, I used to sit in the seat and pretend I was driving. I always had the dream of restoring it but we didn't because it was too rusty. That is the car that is responsible for infecting me with the Saab disease. :-)
