Don't get me wrong in what I'm about to say here.

If ever there was a car that was worth trying to do it yourself - this is the kind of car. If you mess up, have fun try it again. These are not Ferrarri's, and never will be. Most shows that I take the car to, people just look at me like "what's up with this" and smile. Once you restore these cars to a high level and are afraid to drive it, the fun seems to me to be over. I had little in the way of mechanical skills when I bought this car, and have enjoyed learning my way around after getting over the fear of messing something up. I have surprised myself with the amount of mechanical competence that I didn't know I had- I still have a long way to go!

I have another really clean restored car, but the Saab is the most fun to drive; a completely original down to the paint and interior, but not concours, driver. Sure I love those restorations where every bolt has been refinished, even a little jeleous I guess, but I don't know how comfortable I would be driving the car around (the way that I know that I like to).

On the other hand, my restored BMW makes me a little nervous to drive because of the financial outlay that I have in the car, and restored condition of the car. I have to say the car is less enjoyable to drive due to the above factors and nothing to do with the type of car vs. the Saab.

I have found that buying the best possible example, paying a little extra up front based on condition, and then working from there has always been the best solution for me.

Again, just my .02 cents

Randy
