She's right, you should be doing it the other way around. If you think about your girlfriend all the time, at least your car won't think you're nuts!
My take on valve seats: As long as your car got driven a lot when men were men and gas was leaded, you may not need to do anything as long as you DON'T TOUCH the valve seats. They've probably got enough 'lead memory' built up on them to last them for a while. I'm in my fifth year of owning my '74 Sonett, which I drive pretty hard and pretty frequently, at least during the warm-weather months. I also adjust the valve clearances every spring. Valve-seat recession (wear) would show up here first, as changing valve clearances -- but from year to year, I've never had changes larger than a couple of thousandths, which makes me think the valve seats must be holding out pretty well. If you're a worrier, you could start adding some lead substitute to your gas.
On the other hand, if you ever disturb the valves or seats in any way -- such as having a valve job done -- then that would wipe out the 'lead memory,' and you'd almost certainly want to have hardened seats installed as part of that job. They talk about this a lot in MG mags because the average MG needs a valve job about every 75 miles, but I don't think it's quite as pressing an issue with our V4s...
