As I read down through the posts, and past posts for that matter, there is always questions about the processes and steps neccessary for rebuilding a 1500/1700 v4 engine.

I know this is not club, just a board with some VERY knowledgable participants. Has anyone ever considered putting together some sort of step-by-step process worksheets for what to do in regards to starting the process of rebuilding i.e. what to dismantle first, when to send the block or heads out for cleaning and calibration etc.? I am very interested in cars, do most of my own mechanical work, but I am intimidated about an engine rebuild (I have a spare 1700 on a stand, and I purchased the parts inventory of a local Saab mechanic, and have almost everything I need (in NOS stock, even the steel balance shaft gear, rebuilt rocker assmby) for the job. I would like to do this, and I see interest from others as I read down through the posts.

It doesn't have to be illustrated or have photos, but the general process of how to get the ball rolling. Something to fill in the gaps that aren't spelled out in the manuals (I'm pretty much a moron, an interested moron, but a moron just the same.)

I know I would be willing to pay for simplified info on this process. I'm involved with the VSCNA formerly the New England Sonett Club and have posed the same question. Many of us are obviously interested in cars - vintage Saabs in particular, but lack some of the abilities, or better yet, the proper simplified information that many of you take for granted, and it seems that many of you also know shortcuts that aren't shown in the manuals. (I have the big factory binder, Haynes, and Autobook). I guess this should be enough for the average person, but I still feel a little intimidated. ( I have the engine completely disassembled, and bagged. I have no history of its life, but know the balance shaft must have been an issue since the shaft end is grooved out, and the bearing is shreaded - but did not damage the passage through the block. The block has sat for years, and is pretty gunked up, but I was told - perfectly usable for the rebuild.

I really want to learn this stuff, and have benefited from this board, and all of your info greatly!

I guess what I'm asking is: When I get the thing apart, then what do I do? what to do to clean up the block? where to send the camshaft? Piston sizes? ring sizes? how do I know what to buy? order of reassembly?

I know this was really long, thanks for hanging in there through this.

Back to your reguarly scheduled programming.

Randy
