Two stroke trouble....

I own a 66 mixer. I'm experiencing a sluggishness I have never experienced. The car ran fine before , but gradually running more lethargic. The hills are the most dreadful as the car moves in a snail pace fashion. First I checked the spark plugs..a normal tannish brown. I went for the points, but it is just so tight in there, I couldn't get through. What tools are best to get to those points? i also notice a slight leak under the carb....oil/gas. Can this be the cause? The questions amy sound foolish , but not familiar with the two strokes. Last but not least , how is timing checked on these cars? Any other possibilities? thanks
