The biggest thing to consider in upgrading headlights is the additional current draw. Most modern lights pull at least twice the current of the original-style bulbs. This overload affects the bulb connector, the wiring, the relays and the fuse panel for the lights. I guess if you only were running them for short periods you could get by with the overload. For extended periods the connectors and wires would become hot and possibly melt or break and short out. To take care of this, you would need to wire the new lights through a relay with wiring sufficient to carry the load. This then brings up the problem that most older Saabs only had 35 amp alternators and that just provides enough power to run the car in bright sun (read the many posts here and in the Sonett board about upgrading alternators). Again, the 35 amp alternator could keep up for a while but on a cold, rainy night when you need to run the lights, the heater fan and the windshield wipers you will eventually find your bright lights dimming out as the alternator and battery cannot keep up. What's the answer? Be ready to do several upgrades for the brighter lights.
