Marty,
I have just restored my 1971 96 V4 and am using it as an occasional daily driver in California. I had no trouble finding parts, but it is not as easy as going to Autozone and getting them, so it takes a while. I did most of my shopping on eBay, with Chip at west of sweden saab (see his website and call him up, he's great help), the swedish saab club (slow but good rare parts....http://www.saabklubben.com). Most of the parts are pretty pricy, but 96 are suprisingly robust so you can rebuild a lot of stuff. I totally re-did my engine bay including paint, engine (with some performance parts), tranny, all hoses, rad, bushings, suspension, brakes and am painting the car this month.....after all that, it was totally worth it because you can drive such a unique funky car.
One suggestion, which is universal to all classic cars is get the best that you can afford and don't get rusty heaps. It's always more expensive to restore the car piece by piece than to start out with a great example.
cheers,
konradv4
