The similarities between driving an old VW and a SAAB 95/96 are close to nil. The SAAB drives like a car, rather than like a toy.
Electrical system has no typical problem areas at all. And I certainly wouldn't call them "hard to maintain"... it's an old car, but of WAY better build quality than a US made car of the same era.
