"Interestingly enough, I've only ever heard americans talk about "fragile freewheels" in V-4s. Here in Sweden, where the cars in question are plentiful, I've never heard one single complaint about this, even from rallye drivers with engines tuned upwards of 130 Hp. Go figure!"
I don't understand it either, Magnus. All I know is that one day last year I was running my mostly stock Sonett (probably no better than 75hp) at an open-track day (of which it previously had completed more than a dozen with no problems), made what I thought was a normally gentle downshift exiting an 85mph straightaway into a 50mph corner, and PING! no drive. It turned out that the freewheel hub had shattered.
My theory as to why the Swedish rally drivers don't have this problem is that they're hoarding all the older, stronger, 6-roller freewheel hubs, leaving us Americans with the later, weaker 10-roller hubs!
