I would suggest that if you really don't want to spend 3000 or whatever it costs to have the rust totally removed, your options are still broader than pay or let it die. There are a number of products out there that will, if nothing else, slow the rust down. Keep the car clean, try and keep it indoors, scrape off what comes off and apply a rust inhibiting sealant (POR 15, or something) and enjoy the car for many years more. Those rear quarterpanels come off quite easily and you can address anything in those seams. It will always be a losing battle, but it can be a prolonged battle that allows you to enjoy the car a lot longer.
