I'd had the idea for this set-up for a while myself and I'm relieved to see that it looks as good as I had envisioned in my head. Initially I was just going to replace my malfunctioning speedometer with one from a Sonett III so I could get the trip odometer but then I acquired a whole gauge cluster from eBay so I thought why not install the whole thing. There is no trouble with clearance from behind, in fact there is more clearance since the gauges are not recessed into the dash panel as they would be on a stock 96. The hardest part was cutting out the stock dash to make the gauges fit, I used a mini hacksaw, a jigsaw would probably work better. Normally I'd have reservations about hacking up a vintage Saab dash but the previous owner had drilled lots of holes in it for extra switches so it was already not original. I hope to have it painted and put back together this weekend, I'll take some photos then.
P.S. If you're interested in doing the project yourself, I have the template for the adaptor piece which can be made from sheetmetal or aluminum.
