Darren,
Get yourself an old fuel guage or clock, hacksaw the back off, slide the guts out, and slide in a new AutoMeter Tachometer with the black guage face and white lettering (around $75 dollars) and really easy to wire in. I did this based on what another person on this site had done, and it looks original and great! I believe the guage is like 2 1/16" or so, and AutoMeter has a mini tach on its site that fits perfect.
It looks like it belongs in the dash. The clocks all seem either not work, or keep horrible time. If you need a guage, I probably got one floating around here somewhere.
As far as wiring it in, you will have to remove the non-functioning clock and the ashtray bracket, drill a 1/2 in hole in the firewall, put a black rubber electrical grommet in the hole to make everything look professional, neat and keeps the wiring from rubbing against the bare metal. I ran a wire to the coil, negative ground, and fuse box. Solder your connections etc.
I can't remember the other persons name on this site who thought this one up, but its a great way to add functionality to an otherwise difficult dash guage.
Good luck,
Randy
