The most popular mistake every budding mechanic makes sooner or later is
installing the distributor 180 degrees off. This is easy to do because in a 4 cycle engine each piston reaches top dead center once on the compression stroke and once on the exhaust stroke. Therefore you can time it to fire when it is pushing fuel out the exhaust pipe instead of compressing fresh fuel. On a two cycle engine (a stroker), it fires a charge every revolution and pushes fuel out the exhaust at the same time
it is starting to suck in fresh fuel. The first thing I would do would be to turn the engine to TDC, pull the dist. cap, not the position of the rotor tip and remove and reinstall the distributor so the rotor is point to 180 away from it;s original position. If it doesn't run better, or if it runs worse, You have to find the #1 cylinder coming up to tdc on the
compression stroke. There are several ways to do this; pulling the #1 plug,
have a friend (!) turn the engine over while you hold your thumg over the spark plug hole to feel the compressed air. I prefer the method of setting
the valve timing described in the manual: Take the valve cover off the driver side and turn the engine until the intake and exhaust valves on the #4 cylinder are "rocking". The #1 piston is then at tope dead ctr on the compression stroke. If you back it up to 6 btdc, then set the distributor
statically, so it fires the plug, it is close enough to start and run right electrically speaking. (But i dont know if you can do this with petronix. ) After rereading your description, if you are still stuck, the only things I can think of is the bolt on the distributor (petronix) is not
tight and is lettiing it slip out of time, or the new weber isn't working right. Have you tried it with the old fomoco? It ran on that didnnt it?
