After having owned a wonderful 96 v4 DeLuxe in the early 80s (and being crazy enough to sell it) I have finally bought another, in very good condition. If possible, I'd like to improve the performance of my Saab 96 without making any internal modifications to the engine. Apart from a lightened flywheel and an electric fan, I plan to investigate either a K&N air filter or an ITG. The ITG sounds even more efficient and more easily adaptable to a Saab 96 than the K&N. Regarding the exhaust system, I have heard of others installing one made by MSS. However, I can't seem to find coordinates to this source. Forgive my ignorance but what does MSS stand for and does anyone know how to contact them? Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Also, is the exhaust made by MSS better than a Jetex from Great Britain? The Jetex company makes a sport exhaust specifically designed for the Saab Model 96, according to their website but the cost is somewhat high:
http://www.jetex.co.uk/website/jetex_exhausts_chooser.php?mat=Aluminised+Steel&mak=Saab&mod=96
The Jetex is supposed to have superior airflow while keeping the car quiet, but with a very distinctive 'sporty' sound. Has anyone experienced either the MSS or Jetex or both (or another)?
A final brief question as well: has anyone tried coating an intake manifold with special high tech coatings designed to repel heat and to keep the air-fuel mixture a few degrees cooler? It supposedly bumps up the horsepower a slight little bit. I've seen these coatings discussed for this very purpose, made by high-tech companies, sold at a reasonable cost.
Thanks,
Henry
