I worked on a Sonett III that had been sitting since 1988. When I checked the transmission fluid (the car had been driven maybe as much as 50 miles from the time we got it running) the fluid was rust colored and foaming (weeks after it was drained nothing had settled out). I drained the crud out of it and put three quarts of ATF in. I put the front end up on jack stands, started it up and ran it at 1500 rom in fourth gear for about an hour. There were several issues that called for rebuilding it (the third gear synchro "dogs" were all on the magnet when I pulled the plug on it) and when I opened up the transmission, it was _very_ clean, although I could see some pitting in the gears where there had been rust.
