There is a 'universal' joint inside the firewall that allows the shift shaft to turn - this joint rarely fails but it is att'd to the shaft on both ends with taper pins which came come loose. If you are lucky it is just a matter of tightening the 5/16's nut(s) just the way it is attached now. If you ever need to release the u joint, remove the nut and place it at the other end of the pin and it will draw out the taper.
