Hey Mark--they call me "Clutch" in the Washington Saab Club 'cause I've had a lot of similar troubles. Had a clutch go bad at the SOC05 in Vermont due to a leaky rear main seal. Had to spray brake cleaner down the inspection hatch every 100 miles to get home. Last August, had the lower snap ring fall off of the newly replaced throwout and lunched the fork and pressure plate--just 1 mile before reaching the Richmond car show. Two engine-outs in a single year--ouch.
It sounds like what you have is similar to what happened to my car in Richmond. Advise is easy--get a whole new set of clutch parts, maybe even a lightened flywheel, pull the drivetrain, crack it open and see what needs to be done. Painful, but a learning experience. One of the rites of passage for most long-time Sonett owners. Not impossible to do yourself--if you have knowledgeable help and a pilot shaft for lining up the clutch.
