Hi John,
I happen to have a '68 96 Deluxe. The Deluxe model has a few interesting features. First, it has a fancy gauge package that includes a tach. I have seen these gauge clusters go for several hundred dollars on ebay recently. Other differences include the upholstery, two chrome strips low on the doors, chrome rear side windows, Deluxe badging, special trim rings on the wheels...maybe I'm forgetting one or two things. But its mainly trim.
A solid rust free car is easily worth that price back in the rust-infested Northeast. If the car hasn't been driven much lately, you're looking at a complete hydraulic rebuild. That varies from maybe $200 to $500, depending on if you need your master sleeved. And that's parts alone.
It also depends on what you want to do with the car- is it going to be a driver? A long term restoration? For the latter, you must look at your cost/time investment vs what you could buy for one already completed. There's what appears to be a really nice '68 for sale on Saabnet right now for $6500. A decent paint job could run you $3000. A motor rebuild $1500 to $2000. Trans rebuild is $1200. Interior redone- never had one done, but I but you could spend $1000 to have seats recovered, headliner, new dash pad, etc. All depends on what you want to do. If you get enjoyment out of doing the project, buy all means do it!
On the other hand, if you want a driver- basically a decent old Saab that you don't care so much about the interior, paint, etc, and just want a fun old acar to drive- then you're probably looking at a few hundred to get it running right after you purchase it. It might need an exhaust system, tuneup, brakes, etc.
If you wanted to, you could email me pictures and I'd give you my opinion, for whatever its worth. And believe me, I'm NOT interested in the car...
