There's several factors, including, as you mention, how it is driven. The others have to do with the condition of the components that are not replaced. Jack replaces all bearings and some of his replacements are improvements over stock. He also provides better shaft nut locks- loosening shaft nuts is a prime source of failure. He shotpeens the ring and pinion to increase life. And he sets the tolerances up tighter than the factor. This are all improvements. However, many of he components are still used and are "wear" items. Like the ring and pinion, and sychros and gears. He DOES replace any component he sees as worn.
Another factor is the proper use of gear oil and frequent changes. Another factor is the freewheel, which can be a weak link- Jack of course, almost insists on locking it out for this very reason.
With all that said, I'd expect his rebuild to last a very long time. It's the very best you can do, short of finding a NOS gearbox.
