Hi Mark,
Do you know what the previous fluid was? Was it silicone (DOT 5) by chance? If so, then the two don't mix and that could cause your second problem, the more catastrophic failure.
However, the first problem (the sloppy pedal) may be the root cause. Sounds to me like it was time for the slave to be rebuilt and it was getting ready to fail. It could be that inside the slave cylinder, a ridge of crud and corrosion was built up. When you refilled and bled the system, the slave probably went through its FULL RANGE of travel, past the layer of crud, and that probably made the internal slave rubber not so happy and it gave up the ghost. Back years ago- guys would find an old Chevy or Dodge with a big motor owned by a little old lady and never driven over 35 MPH- they were in heaven to find such a babied vehicle. The first time they took it out and really opened it up, it would start burning oil like mad. This is because the top ring would break when it hit the 35 MPH ridge in the top of the cylinder bore! Could be the same for your slave...
Time for a slave rebuild if the internal cylinder is not too bad. BTW, Castrol LMA is an excellent choice!
