Jon, idle specifications are relatively low, 700 to 800 is good, and will help up shifting as the revs are slow to fall after shifting at 3-4,000 if the idle speed is above 800, and the syncros get worked a bit more. Lower idle speeds below 700 are OK but the Type of oil supply, petroil or injection will determine how low you can really go. Petroil supplied motors need idle oil getting into the engine for freewheel over run conditions and to supply opil for long hill descents after working up the hill, depleting the wick supply of oil over supplied on hill pulling and acceleration. Petroil engines must have the slightly higher 7-800 RPM idle. Remember the idle mixture circuit on the center carb is designed to be overcompensating with rich idle mixture because some throttle flap just air only is passing 1&3 carbs with the base idle speed screw affecting the opening of the throttle discs on all three carbs at once. The long and short of this is: does the idle mixture screw cause idle stalling with a minumum of one turn out from fully closed. Conversely it is normal for the carb to show no over rich idle effect until 3-4 turns out from closed are effected with the idle mixture screw. This too indicates normal for tri carb strokers. If the above idle mixture response parameters is noted, than simply stay in the 2-3 turn out from closed area. If the center carb idle screw response is out of the above range, The Idle and pilot jets should be cleaned and a quick float level test preformed. it is pretty rare to have center carb too low , but high is common and its main symptom is not idle stall when till almost closed AND engine stalling on moderate to heavy braking. Rri carbs gave better fuel economy especially mid range, than the single carb that preceeded it. Don
