With a manual choke depressing the gas pedal should not be needed to cold start properly. With temperatures going down to 18ºF with a Weber 2-bbl I started with no problem with the following sequence:
* Pull out choke 100%
* Turn on ignition
* After a few seconds choke back until engine runs smoothly without indication of rich mixture.
If I used the car the day before and there is no need of pumping up fuel first it will start within a second; it starts even quicker than my 9000 then.
Cold start improved remarkably after installing a Pertronix with blue Bosch coil. It runs strongly without giving the idea it might die if you press the gas pedal.
