Good thoughts Jonathan, I have a couple of additions.
1) Not only is a high-pressure pump designed for injector systems unnecessary, it positively should not be used on a carbureted vehicle. The pressure developed can overwhelm the float bowl valve and easily end up with fuel spraying everywhere out of the carb; also special fuel line is required.
2) Cavitation and inability to suck fuel from a level lower than the pump are problems characteristic of rotary pumps. The Airtex E8012S is a diaphragm pump that goes click-click instead of whirr-whirr. Mine is mounted above tank level in the engine compartment as previously detailed, and has never had a problem. $39 if you google "Airtex E8012S fuel pump" and poke around, or available locally for maybe a little more. I carry a spare (and tools to replace it) which I consider cheap insurance. Replacement is a snap if mounted as I describe.
