Well, with enough money and time you can do anything. ;) You'd have to give some care and thought to how you handled cooling, though. The cooling "tin" that ducts air around the VW engine is critical, and you *must* keep the top of the engine compartment sealed from the bottom or it will overheat.
You'd have to use the Saab transaxle, or flip the ring gear over to the other side of the diff in the VW unit...otherwise you'd end up with a car with four reverse speeds and one forward. ;)
I'm not sure why you'd want to do this, though. The Saab engine is more powerful and sturdier. And you get a working heater! ;) Parts availability *might* currently be better for the Bug engine, but keep in mind that engine isn't made anymore, either. The magnesium alloy crankcases are soft and can only take so many rebuilds before the bearing seats get too pounded out. Eventually the sources of good, new crankcases may dry up and it will be really hard to keep a bug engine going.
