My engine block is red, with a green timing cover. I suspect someone repainted it, though. The engine mounting arms are painted the same color. My history on this car is sketchy but I know the engine has been out at least once for a transmission repair, and I was told it was rebuilt at one point. (Seems likely given the mileage on the car.) It has a Solex carb and the long-snout style air cleaner, but of course those could have been swapped from a different engine.
I couldn't find the engine number. From the Haynes manual it looks like it should be stamped between the left head and the timing cover, but I don't see anything there. It's possible it's just covered up with grime.
There are a lot of oddities about this car that are kind of hard to figure out, especially when I've never had another one to look at. For example, among the more puzzling to me is the complete lack of windshield washers. I've got the wiring, but no tank, pump, plumbing, or jets, and I can't figure out where the jets would have even been attached. This may be related to the fact that the hood appears to have been replaced; the inside of the hood is not the same color as the outside. I think I may have a FrankenSaab on my hands.
